| Disc Golf has shaped a lot of my adult life. I owe a lot to this game. The lessons I’ve learned along the way have made me who I am today. Striving to become a good disc golfer has taught me a lot about life and what it takes to become good at anything. It’s taught me that traditional golf is just recreation for me, I simply don’t have the desire it would require to become good at that game. I still try to get a bucket or two in if I have an outing coming up, but that’s about it. It’s taught me that meditation and/or prayer is a very powerful tool, not just for golf, but for most everything one deals with in day to day life. It’s taught me that exercise and eating healthy food is important to feeling good and helps to have a positive outlook on things. It’s taught me that balance, in every capacity, is key to success. I’ve realized over the last 2 or 3 years that it’s not about disc golf. It’s about living a full and healthy life. The things I’ve done to become a good discer have also helped me become a better person. I’m not saying I’m perfect, far from it. But I’d rather not see the Tanner Duncan that never found disc golf. The places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and continue to meet around this great country, have filled my life with some awesome experiences and times I’ll never forget. I owe a lot to this game. Sitting here one week out from the first tournament of the season I feel lucky. Lucky that I had some reason to hit the YMCA over the winter. Lucky that I feel healthy, and alive. Lucky to be one happy guy. I used to wonder if I was wasting my life chasing a silly game. I now know that is not the case. I owe a lot to disc golf. It has taught me a lot about myself, and how I want to navigate this one chance I get at life. I’m lucky that when I think about things in these terms, playing Oskaloosa on Saturday will just be a walk in the park. |
